'Sugar' is a 4 minute, trembling glimpse into the apocalyptic minds of it's creators. Hosting lyrics and music from all three of Jack Pool, Jamie Scarratt and Sarah Ryan, 'Sugar' explores themes of blame, relationship breakdown, exploitation, and the fading, falling feeling of coming to grips with reality - in the process of creating the world of the song, Jack wrote Sarah a short story, a space romance epic, about two characters called The Sugar King, and The Mademoiselle, falling in love and then catastrophically breaking apart, though the song itself is only loosely based on this.
Counted in by the broken primal scream of Jamie Scarratt, the choruses are a thundering homage to some of the gritty blues of the late 60s and 70s, every instrument locked into a harsh chunking rhythm that encapsulates the feeling of rage one might feel on the losing side of an argument, Sarah Ryan and Jack Pool's vocals are strained and painful, bouncing back off of one another.
The verses are swaying and more contemplative, but constantly feeling on the edge of crumbling into chaos, and the song concludes with a terrifying build, an explosion of anger displayed by bombastic drum fills and blisteringly messy guitar, leading finally into a sad calm sigh, as Jack and Sarah tribute their peculiar love of gregorian choir music, letting you drop, heart still beating with the furious pace of the song, quite surely down to Earth.
lyrics
Sugar
That’s why I’m struggling
Sugar
That’s why I’m breaking apart
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
Oh sugar
That’s why I’m crying
You filled me with life
My skin shone through the night
My shining, glittery mind
Is coming down down down to Earth
Sugar
That’s why I’m struggling
Sugar
That’s why I’m breaking apart
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
Oh sugar
That’s why I’m crying
Who in this world will come and save me?
Who in this world will come and take me away?
Sugar, what have you done?
I’m coming down down down to Earth
Sugar
That’s why I’m struggling
Sugar
That’s why I’m breaking apart
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
He’ll see you now
Oh sugar
That’s why I’m crying
Sugar, what have you done?
I’m coming down down down to Earth
Sugar, what have have you done?
I’m coming down down down to Earth
